Packing for Machu Picchu - 2D/1N Inca Trail

Travelling to Machu Picchu is an amazing trip of a lifetime and is one of the most famous destinations in South America.

For me and my partner it was our first time travelling to South America and doing the 2 Day, 1 Night Inca Trail.
We traveled South America between 24th April - 10th May 2019, more SA blogs to follow.

Machu Piccu Inca Trail (2 Day/1 Night) on the 27th-28th April 2019.

So, from our experience here's what we advise to pack....

1. Backpack
On our chosen tour with Inti Sun Trek we were to hike without porters, this meant that we had to hike with our back packs.
It is important that you carry a decent size backpack as it will have everything you need for the 2 Days and 1 Night stay on the Inca Trail.

For me I had a 30-litre size backpack which was completely fine.

On My/In My Backpack

  • Water Canister
Take a water canister with you that will fit nicely in one of the size pockets of your backpack. This is the only water you have during your 6hr Hike on Day 1 so if this isn't enough i would advise to take 2 Water Canisters.

Between my partner and I we had 3 canisters

  • Leave space for snack and lunch
Again, with our tour group we had to make sure we left some space for our pack lunch, so it was important not to fill up your backpack all the way.

  • Outfit for the night and next day (the 2nd day of the Inca Trail doesn't involve any hiking but sightseeing the Machu Picchu site itself):
jumper
jeans
x2 pairs of socks
x2 pairs of underwear
Pyjamas
Raincoat – for both days

  •     Toiletries (My Partner & I distributed the toiletries between us):
Toilet Roll
3 Cans of Jungle Spray - Deet
Sunscreen
Quick Dry towel
  •        Make-Up:
I carried very minimal Make-Up, and had it put in the front pocket of the backpack along with sanitary towels.

2. What I wore on the 6Hr Hike:
Besides everything that I packed here's what I wore on the day of the 6Hr Hike:
  • Nike Dry Fit Leggings
  • Thermal Leggings on top - this I took off during the hike and wrapped on the outside of my backpack
  • Thermal long-Sleeved top
  • Dry Fit Short Sleeve top
  • Fleece - I did take off and wrap around my waist during the hike
  • Good Hiking Shoes - on this trek they do say you can wear a good pair of trainers; however, I would advise a good pair of Hiking Boots. This is exactly what I did, and my feet didn't hurt. I was planning to take another pair of nice shoes for the 2nd day however thought it would be best to travel light.
  • Hat
  • Bum Bag - contained my Hand Sanitizer/Passport/Phone/Money
  • Hiking Sticks – provided by the tour company
